"Maneki Neko, or Beckoning Cat"

This netsuke of the cat who brings good fortune into the shops is also a saving box or bank. It has 10 five yen coins to put inside the bank. In Japan, saving boxes were not made to open. Coins were meant to be saved. This piece is made to appear to be cast iron. Two coins have been inserted by the artist, eight coins remain in a drawstring pouch, up to the discretion of the purchaser whether to save or spend them.

Height, 5.5 cm. (2 3/16").
